Trigger Point Therapy
Trigger points are areas of hyperirritability in the soft tissue structure. They are manifested by continuous muscle contractions (not necessarily due to injury) confined to a small spot causing hard knots in the muscles. Trigger points can be an acute source of pain or remain unnoticed by the client until pressure is applied by the therapist causing pain to be referred to some other site. For example, a headache may not be caused by a problem in the head itself, but have been sent to the head from a trigger point on the side of the neck. Factors such as poor nutrition, stress and chronic illness are also considered as potential contributors towards trigger points.
Trigger point therapy helps to break the self-sustaining vicious circle that has kept the muscle contracted. It does this by stretching the knotted muscle fibres and increasing circulation enabling oxygen and nutrients to flow to the spot.
Reflexology is based on the principle that there are areas/points in the feet, hands and outer ear which influence glands and organs in the body. Cupping has been around for thousands of years and is an ancient form of alternative medicine where special cups (glass, bamboo or plastic) are placed on your skin to create suction.
One way to think about cupping is that it is the inverse of massage. Rather than applying pressure to muscles, the suction uses pressure to pull skin, tissue and muscles upward. Hot stone massage is a type of massage that involves the use of smooth, heated stones that the massage therapist places on your body. The therapist also uses the stones in the palms of his or her hands to massage the body.
The penetrating heat and weight of the stones are said warm and relax tense muscles so the therapist can work deeper, more quickly.
Some people find the warmth of the hot stones to be comforting and deeply relaxing. Hot stone massage is suited to people who tend to feel chilly.
